And you adopted another child, right?
Yes, we adopted from China. I wasn’t able to get pregnant so we decided to adopt and then of course I got pregnant. So Shelby was born and then in six weeks, the other baby came. So I only had one baby for six weeks.
What is it like going from not having any to all of a sudden having two?
It’s overwhelming. I just keep thinking if I only had one of these precious little things it would be a lot easier. Two is difficult, but it’s also fantastic. It’s what we wanted and they are both healthy and perfect and it’s really great. We don’t get any sleep, neither of us do, but that is alright

"This is the first.time we’ve been on Broadway together in five years."

Terrence Mann and his fiancee Charlotte d’Amboise gave Dancer this interview sharing a couch, sharing injuries and trying to share a life. ’We were going to get married in October, but she got Lola in Damn Yankees. We moved the date to April,but now I’11 be in Los Angeles with Beauty and the Beast .

D’Amboise sat with an ice pack on her shoulder. "I dislocated it in the first act but it went back in." She finished the show in trouper style unaware of the extent of the damage until the next morning . Impressive swelling and pain wakened her. Mann says, "I’m in good shape. Just a bad right knee. Sciatica. Shin splints and sinus problems from the cold, rainy weather." Since October they have been working across Times Square from each other - he at the Palace and she at the Marquis. Mann is a line drawing on posters or covered in prosthetic makeup in photos. D’Amboise fares better At the Marquis - a life-size poster of her wearing a lot of leg as Lola greets all who pass. "I hope I get to keep it!"

They noted the evolution of musicals and its effect on performers. "It’s scary," said d’Amboise. "The special effects are taking over in sets, costumes and make-up. People are paying $60 to $70 a seat. They want their money’s worth." Mann added, "Shows have become technical extravaganzas, microcosms of theme parks.
In the past, shows were created and written for stars. Now the show is the star."

D’Amboise and Mann work daily on vocalizing, ballet barres, Pilates and studying with vocal coach Eddie Savegh during his regular trips in from San Francisco. D’Amboise: "Your whole life is concerned with the show." Mann: "Performing Is self-serving and self-absorbing it’s not about doing eight shows a week. it’s
about doing 250 with all the colds and the maladies, dealing with things over a period of months. The hard part is to stay healthy over the long run. The entire cast shares colds until spring. These are the things nobody thinks about. We can’t have fights or yell. We don’t go to bars with all the loud music to have to talk over. There’s no staying up late even if we’re just staying at home.

As performers, they also watch and critique each other. D’Amboise: "’Terrence works too hard . He gives 110 percent He hits things hard." Mann: "I do work too hard. Every laugh has to be huge and every emotional scene makes someone cry. It’s those extremes that make it passionate."

D’Amboise explains that they help each other fine-tune their performances and tone them down to reasonable physical limits. D’Amboise: "I give him many mini-notes. He takes about half of them." Mann: "Charlotte has this innate sense of timingand can find all these subtleties and nuances in a part. She’s very specific. She’s also a good dancer, has a great voice, a great body, is drop dead gorgeous, sexy and funny -
very funny."

Mann, 43 and d’Amboise, 30 have impressive resumes which include Tony nominations. Mann originated the role of the Beast, did Rum Tum Tugger in Cats, Javert in Les Mis and had a lead role in the movie A Chorus Line. They met during Cats and later did Jerome Robbins’ Broadway together.

SAB-trained d’Amboise did Carrie and Song and Dance on Broadway, Cats nationally, the films The In Crowd and America Blue Note, and has done off-Broadway productions and music videos. They still audition.

While Disney had Mann in mind from the beginning to do the Beast, he had auditions. d’Amboise had done Damn Yankees regionally (Regional to a New Yorker can be anything five minutes from the city) . "I knew I was right for the part of Lola when I heard there was to be an opening. I called my agent and had about three or four auditions."

These are the good times. Both are climbing out of debt from a long, dry spell. "What’s sad is that it will happen again," said d’Amboise. "it’s always feast or famine:’ said Mann Both keep alternatives and future plans in mind. D’Amboise: "ldon’t want to dance that much anymore. Acting and singing excite me more. I
want to do more television and straight plays m the city. I’d rather direct than choreograph . I tend to see the whole and can’t be bothered with a lot of little steps. And we want to have children."

She knows her choices are exceptionally challenging. "Being a director is hard for women - it ’s very competitive." As for straight plays in New York - the work is extremely thin. Only one is on Broadway this season.

What does Mann want to be doing? "Anything but eight shows a week." He would like to play a human being, after long stints in Cats and Beauty and the Beast. Javert in Les Mis didn’t count. " He was about an inch from being human," he said, measuring a minute inch with his fingers. Regional work holds opportunities for him.

He left the Beast on Broadway in January before be is to open in the LA production in April . That so-called break found him m Raleigh where he is artistic director of the North Carolina Theatre. He ha d two weeks to direct My Fair Lady, one of the five musicals the theater mounts each year. Charlotte’s brother, Christopher, formerly with the New York City Ballet, recently returned from Europe, was the
choreographer.

"North Carolina has been regionally good for me. It has been a creative, theatrical nurturing ground for me." He graduated with honors from the North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston Salem and has fourteen credits toward his Masters. Calling himself a "country boy from Lexington, Kentucky, " he feels he could be happy living and working in North Carolina. City-born and city-bred Charlotte glares at him
silently, saving her voice.

Mann continued, "I like directing. Directing theater is an actor’s medium. My concept of dire cting, from my third eye is to influence them in the direction they instinctively want to take but short stop themselves (from following)." Theatre is changing. To those who think they can’ t live without it d’Amboise and Mann
offer this advice: d’Amboise: "The moms and dads are going to love this: Get an education . I never went to college, and it’s not something I feel I can do now. If I had done it, other things would have opened for me. College is good for you.You have an alternative if you want to get out of the business." Their children will go to college, she stated, not saving her voice. Mann agreed: "In my talks to high school groups, I tell them they must have an absolutely tenacious desire and the passion to be a performer. They must want to do it more than anything else. And they have to get an education. I think performing arts school has the best environment, They’ll develop confidence and competence in heated competition."

Dancer leaves. The leads, voices some what limbered from this interview need to get back to work.

NEW YORK -- La pièce américaine Lend Me a Tenor de Ken Ludwig et la comédie musicale Broadway de Jerome Robbins sont en tête des nominations pour les Tony Awards 89, rendues publiques hier à New York.

Les Tony, fondés par la comédienne Antoinette Perry en 1947 et qui constituent la récompense suprême à Broadway, seront remis pour la 43e fois le 4 juin à New York, lors d’une cérémonie télédiffusée.

Pour le théâtre, Lend Me a Tenor a été nommé à sept reprises, notamment dans les catégories suivantes: Meilleure pièce de théâtre, meilleur acteur (deux fois avec Philip Bosco et Victor Garber), meilleure second rôle féminin (Tovah Feldshuh) et meilleure direction (Jerry Zaks).

Cette pièce produite par Martin Starger et The Really Useful Theatre Co est talonnée de près par The Heidi Chronicles de Wendy Wasserstein et Largely New York de Bill Irwin, qui ont reçu respectivement six et cinq nominations.

Pour la comédie musicale, Jerome Robbins’ Broadway fait déjà figure de favorite avec dix nominations, notamment dans les catégories suivantes: meilleure comédie musicale, meilleur acteur (deux fois avec Jason Alexander et Robert La Fosse), meilleure actrice (Charlotte d’Amboise), meilleur second rôle masculin (Scott Wise) et surtout meilleur second rôle féminin (trois fois, avec Jane Lanier, Faith Prince et Debbie Shapiro).
